Cut, Engrave Or Mark?
Same laser, three jobs. Most pieces use two of them: cut the shape, engrave the logo.
All the way through
Cut
The beam goes right through the sheet and frees the shape. Custom-shape signs, letters, keychains, stencils and cake toppers.
Acrylic up to 1/2 in (12 mm), wood up to 1/4 in (6 mm).
Into the surface
Engrave
The laser removes a thin layer you can feel with a fingertip. Logos and text on wood, acrylic, leatherette, slate and glass, or through the coating on a tumbler.
Text down to 2 mm (about 8 pt) tall.
On the surface
Mark
A permanent change in colour with no depth, for crisp, fine detail on anodized aluminum and coated metal: tags, plates, tools and bottles.
Bare stainless or steel? Ask first.

Set Up Your File

Send a vector file
AI, PDF, SVG or DXF. Vector lines tell the laser exactly where to go. Photos and logos for engraving can be high-resolution PNG or JPG.

Draw cut lines as hairlines
Make every cut line a 0.001 in (0.025 mm) stroke in pure red (RGB 255, 0, 0). Light score lines go in pure blue (RGB 0, 0, 255). Anything filled black gets engraved.

Convert text to outlines
Use Create Outlines (Illustrator) or Object to Path (Inkscape) so your fonts don't get swapped.

Keep details big enough
Lines and gaps at least 0.5 mm wide, and engraved text at least 2 mm (about 8 pt) tall. Stencils need bridges to hold the middles of letters like O and A.

Allow for kerf
The beam removes about 0.1 to 0.2 mm as it cuts. Parts that fit together, like tabs and inlays, need a small offset. We adjust standard jobs for you.

Close paths, no doubles
Every cut shape must be a closed path. Delete stacked duplicate lines: a double line gets cut twice and scorches.

What materials can you laser cut and engrave?
We cut and engrave acrylic, wood (birch plywood, MDF and hardwoods), leatherette and leather, card stock, coroplast and foamcore. We engrave or mark anodized aluminum, powder-coated tumblers and bottles, glass and slate. We don't laser PVC or vinyl because they give off chlorine gas.
Can you laser cut metal?
No. We engrave and mark metal, like tumblers, anodized aluminum and coated tags, but we don't cut it. For metal signs, look at our aluminum and ACM signs.
How big can a laser-cut piece be?
The biggest single piece is 24 × 36 in. Larger signs and wall art can be made in sections that join together. Acrylic cuts up to 1/2 in (12 mm) thick and wood up to 1/4 in (6 mm).
How long do laser jobs take?
Most laser jobs are ready 3 to 5 business days after you approve the proof. Laser work isn't part of same-day pickup. Have a deadline? Put the date on your quote and we'll tell you if we can make it.
Do I need a vector file?
No. Send a logo, a photo or a sketch and we can trace it or design it for you. Tracing and design start at $35, and we quote it before we start.
Is there a minimum order?
No. One custom sign or a single engraved gift is fine. The price per piece drops as the quantity goes up, so ask about team and event runs.
